For Many Children at the Project, You are their Dream.

Meet the Children

Children love being a part of the Project and have said many times that it is a very happy and hopeful place to be. Their dreams are to live happy and healthy lives and that’s exactly what the Project strives to provide them. Having their basic needs covered is life changing for these children, but it is the love that transforms them the most. We’re so happy to introduce you to some of them and hope you fall in love with them as we have!

If you would like to meet some of these children in a video chat, please contact Bruno via Facebook Messenger to arrange this. Bruno’s main Facebook account is Bruno Biryomumaisho. They will be very glad to meet you!

Meet Kiiza!

The Project does not know Kiiza’s first name so they gave him the name “Bruno”, but most of the time they call him Kiiza. He has a heartbreaking history as he already lost both his parents. When he arrived at the orphanage, he was very sad and in such poor condition that (Big) Bruno wasn’t sure he would even survive. He has several siblings living with him at the orphanage as well. Kiiza is one of Jabez’s (Big Bruno’s son) best friends. He is said to be a happy boy now and likes to watch cartoons with him from a staff member’s cell phone. They also play in the mud together when it rains and build pretend houses out of stones. (Big) Bruno says that Kiiza especially likes to eat and that food makes him very happy.

Meet Johnbosco!

Johnbosco still has his mother and she lives in the village very near the orphanage. Johnbosco goes home to sleep every night but the Project supports him in every other way and he is there every day to attend school. Unfortunately, his father has already passed away. Bruno says his father’s death has affected Johnbosco very much and that he is usually still very sad and quiet. When we asked Bruno what Johnbosco likes to do for fun, he didn’t really know how to answer that. He just explained that Johnbosco is always sad and wishes he still had a father. Another thing that contributes to his sadness is seeing how much his mother struggles in the village alone . She never had the opportunity to get an education and is suffering for it every day as there are no jobs available to her and she has no way out of poverty.

Meet Viola!

Viola has a very sad past. She was neglected by her mom at just 10 years old. When Bruno first found her in the village, she was working for a family as a babysitter. This job did not pay, however, and Viola was only working in exchange for food. Her employers were very mean to her and treated her very poorly. Even though the purpose of this job was to have meals provided to her, Viola’s employers barely fed her and she went hungry all the time. Bruno said she only had two articles of clothing and was generally very, very sad. Viola is so happy to be living at the orphanage now where she is cared for and surrounded by people who love her.

Meet Tryphine!

Tryphine says her favorite thing about being a part of the Project is receiving letters and gifts from our Letter Drives.

The things that make her feel sad are getting sick as well as being hungry for an entire day.

She says the thing that makes her most happy is when the Project has enough food for her to eat all three meals in a day.

Lastly, she says if she could have anything she wanted right now, she would want a car. When I asked Bruno if this means she wants to actually drive the car, he chuckled and said yes.

Meet Elizabeth!

“I have been living at the orphanage since 2017. Before joining the Project, I was completely struggling. My parents were neglecting me, not showing me love, didn’t spend time with me, and never wanted to talk with me. In the village, my life was strange because I couldn't get what I needed as a girl - like clothes or enough food - and I was working hard at home.

After getting here at the The Kafunjo Community Project, I’m free and happy. My favorite thing about the Project is that the staff cares about, respects, and loves children. Everyone here looks after me and tries to give me the things I need. Everything comes on its time. Our sponsors, they deserve a lot.”

Meet Trisha!

Trisha, also called “Tressy”, is a very bubbly and confident little girl. Bruno nicknamed her “Commando” because she is always giving people orders!

meet keneth!

“My favorite thing about being part of the Project is having free medication. It happened that we now have our own clinic at the Project. It reduces the increase of malaria in children. Malaria kills easily when it is not treated immediately. But we, children, we are grateful to have free medication. It has helped us a lot to be cured of different diseases which had been stopping us from continuing our studies. Diseases like skin diseases and typhoid fever.”

Meet Rabecca!

“I have nothing to say except when living in the village, my mom went to the bar most of the time for work. Me, a girl, my heart was sad because my mom couldn’t get food for us in time and we couldn’t sleep safely or comfortably because of staying in the bar with her. When my brother, Abel, came to the Project, he was happy he told me. I think our mom was not knowing what to do for us so she let us to move to the Project. Now I am so happy, no more suffering, my life is healthy. Sadness brings tears. But now I’m very happy at the Project.”

Meet Agnes (left)!

Agnes is a very sweet girl. Prior to living at the orphanage, her spirit was pretty shattered. She was always going hungry, didn’t have enough clothes, slept on dirt, and, sadly, had very unloving parents. Unfortunately, she was often very sick while living with her parents because the nurses she was taken to didn’t treat her correctly. Bruno was very heartbroken by the condition he found Agnes and her siblings in and asked their parents if they could live at the orphanage instead. Agnes says she feels very loved now at the orphanage and is especially happy to have clothes and such reliable medical care. Her health has improved a lot. When I asked her if she could have anything in the world - what that would be, she responded with “A backpack, shoes, and clothes.”. Agnes has one pair of nice shoes, but those are kept nice and are only worn on Sundays. During the week, she is always barefoot. She says that she would like to be both a nurse and a mom someday because she loves Bruno and Irene’s triplets. Becoming a nurse or doctor is a common goal for children at the Project because it is a job that pays well.

Meet ANgel!

Meet Catherine!

Bruno says Catherine is a very, very sweet girl. She cannot walk and uses a wheelchair when traveling to and from the orphanage dormitories. Most of the time, however, she prefers to stay put at the school site as it is the most lively. As opposed to using her wheel chair to get everywhere on the school grounds, she finds it easier to just crawl. Her condition is unknown, but we do know that she could walk as a younger child. She is sometimes sad about this because, when other older children at the Project play group games, she is unable to join. However, she is very happy to be living there as she is dearly loved by all. An example of this is the other children help by bringing her food during each meal time. Bruno chuckled when he shared with us that she is so well looked after that sometimes she is brought 3 or 4 different plates of food by different children.

Catherine used to study at Bruno’s primary school but was very behind as her family wasn’t able to afford her school fees when she was young. As she got older, she grew self conscious about being very old for her grade levels and, eventually, decided to stop studying. Educated or not, she has a forever home at the orphanage and has been taken in by Bruno and Irene as one of their own.

Meet Anitah!

Anitah lives at the orphanage. Her parents are still living but they are too poor to care for her. As is true for most villagers, Anitah and her family lived in a house made of mud that, sadly, became damaged by heavy rainfall and they slept on the dirt with just a thin blanket spread underneath them. They only had old, dirty clothes to wear and rarely had access to medical care. Due to their level of poverty, Anitah’s parents couldn’t consistently afford her school fees, so she rarely had the ability to attend school. Anitah is so happy to now be part of the Project where she receives free education, medical care, food, and some clothes.

Meet Caroline!

“My favorite thing about being part of the Project is getting an education. All children feel amazing for having education here as it helps us to learn to speak English and to be smart. Education is the key to life as children. We could get jobs and support ourselves someday. Most girls in Uganda are not respected due to cultural styles but, with education, a girl would be great and seen as useful in working in different areas.”

Meet Leanet!

While Leanet’s father passed away, she still has her mother. Similar to many other children’s stories, the loss of her dad brought about the family’s darkest times. Leanet’s mom could no longer afford enough food for the family and everyone went hungry a lot. In addition to this, her mom had a very hard time finding and affording a place to live.

While Leanet becomes sick often with malaria and chest pain, she is much happier staying at the Project. While she tends to be shy and quiet, she is also said to be very loving, helpful, happy, and hard working. Leanet says she enjoys painting and singing in the church but that her favorite thing is getting visitors at the Project.

meet nicolaus!

“My life was very bad because I was an orphan of both parents before living at the Project. The Project has helped me by providing food, education, and medical care. My living conditions are now well because I am enjoying everything I want like having education and medical care. The Project has changed my future by having education and scholastic materials.”

Meet Emily!

Emily is a lovely girl who has a heartbreaking past. Sadly, she lost her entire family to AIDS just a few years ago. Afterward, she moved in with some extended family members who were already suffering from poverty. Her good friend, Shirah, was already living at Bruno’s orphanage and was the one who invited Emily to join the Project. When she first arrived, she was extremely sad and had nothing but the clothes she was already wearing. Due to Emily’s tragic past, Bruno and Irene decided to adopt her as their own. Bruno says they love Emily very much and that she is a very hard worker. She likes to play group games that involve running and jump rope.

Meet Junior!

Meet Praise!

Praise sleeps in the village with her mom but is supported by the Project in every other way. After her parents separated a while back, her dad left the family and doesn’t help support them anymore. Single mothers struggle a lot in Uganda and they usually find themselves stuck being peasants the rest of their lives with little to no hope of ever getting a job. Praise and her mom moved to Kafunjo to seek help from the Project. They’re so grateful for Praise to be supported and Praise’s mom loves to see her daughter having a chance at education.

Meet Clever!

Meet Rabecca!

Prior to joining the orphanage, Rabecca was sad because she was unable to attend school as her parents couldn’t afford the school fees. Unfortunately, her dad ended up passing away and the man her mom later married made repeated attempts to abuse her. She never felt safe at home and this caused a huge wound in her heart that she still struggles with today. Since joining the Project, Rabecca has become a very happy, funny, and friendly girl who loves to talk and sing. While she is an older girl, she has a youthful joy about her according to Bruno.

5 29 2021 Kato.jpeg

Meet Kato!

Kato, sadly, used to have a twin but he passed away. Before living at the orphanage, Kato lived with his parents in the village. Unfortunately, they weren’t loving toward him and neglected to give him adequate care. It’s very common in Uganda for parent to not care for their children and many fathers spend their free time in bars. Little Kato was never bought clean clothes and the ones he did have were very old and dirty. He was notorious for not smiling when he first arrived at the Project. The way he was treated at home left a sadness in his heart that persisted for a while, but now Kato is smiling again and the Project has changed his life.

Meet Francis!

“Before living at the Project, I was sleeping without enough food. Staying with my old grandma who was not having enough care. I was always sad. After coming to the Project, my life changed completely. Now I can smile as I do have enough basic needs as a child. More on that, I got a chance of studying and having good friends.”

Meet Unity!

Unity’s dad passed away while her mom was still pregnant with her. She was brought to the orphanage because her mom couldn’t afford enough food for the family, however, Unity’s mom and extended family still live very near the orphanage. When she first arrived, Unity was extremely malnourished and was always sick. Bruno says Unity is a healthy girl now who is very funny despite having a quieter disposition. He also says she is always smiling, is loved by everyone, works hard whenever there is work to be done, and loves playing games with all the other children.

Johnson Mbarimu.jpg

Meet Johnson!

“In the village, I was looking after cows. No pay, no chance of smiling. Though I was there (working for food), I was not given enough food and the words of my employers to me were not nice and I’m still young. I’m a brother to Voila who came to the Project long ago. I decided to move to Kafunjo Community Project where now I’m happy and am in good care and no more pain. Bravo Bravo.”

Meet Jonath!

Jonath still has both his parents but they are very poor. Before joining the Project, Jonath didn’t have enough clothes or food. He is looking much healthier and happier these days according to Bruno compared to when he first arrived. Bruno says he’s very shy with new people but is very chatty with his friends. He’s also said to be funny, patient, and hardworking. He enjoys playing drums and singing.

Despite being shy, Jonath says one of his favorite things to do is video chat with sponsors of the Project.

Meet ShibaH!

“The Project has helped me through providing education to me for a better future and giving me basic needs. Before living at the Project, my lifestyle has been not good. Now my living conditions are better. The Project has changed my future by showing me the right way and how an important person I am.”

Meet Bonita!

“My life was hard as I was not happy or feeling free. I was always sick and staying with my single parent mom who was not having a job. I was not having a chance of going to school and was working just for food. I am happy now because of freedom and meeting other children who had the same life before coming to the orphanage and we are all happy. I am free and enjoy and have what I need. Kafunjo sponsors, may God bless them.

Keep the heart for such children and people who don’t have.”

Meet Asaph!

Asaph’s parents are peasants and they couldn’t consistently afford his school fees prior to him joining the orphanage. Now that he’s at the Project, he is no longer sent home for unpaid school fees as the education is free. Many children at the Project still have living (and even loving) parents but they are just too poor to provide for their children anymore. Asaph says his favorite subject in school is math and that he loves singing. He says he loves living at the orphanage because he is provided with enough food. When he lived at home in the village, he went hungry often.
